The Royal Flying Doctor Service is going back to school thanks to Spheres of Influence International
The 964 staff of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) of Australia with its fleet of 53 aircraft operating from 21 bases across the Australian continent to provide emergency aero medical and primary health care services to more than 274,000 people each year, are all going back to school!
Spheres of Influence International has a history of working with clients to achieve innovative business outcomes. The Royal Flying Doctor Service specifically selected the team at Spheres to project manage and deliver an educational resource as the entrepreneurial solution to a long-term objective – to raise awareness of the RFDS and its life saving services.
Recent research has shown that greater than 90% of children between the ages of 5 and 16 in families who live in dense urban areas, particularly along the eastern sea board, have indicated that they have never heard of the RFDS.
Coincidentally, the RFDS, its history, services and relevance to Australia has not been part of the school curriculum for more than 40 years.
Look! Up in the Sky, the new educational initiative and curriculum resource, produced by the expertise of Spheres of Influence International, has been carefully designed to innovatively promote the history, values and services of the RFDS to teachers and students in Years 5 - 9 in all Australian schools.
Of specific note, the Spheres of Influence International Team met the relevant relevant curriculum framework learning outcomes across a variety of subjects and years.
Spheres of Influence International has added another notch to its success belt! How many organisations could have marshalled such an organisation to go back into the classroom!
If you are interested to learn more about this project you are invited to contact the Melbourne Office of the Royal Flying Doctor Service on 03 9521 2633 and their National Educational Manager will be delighted to speak with you.

Influential in the Third Sector
Patrizia Torelli, Managing Director of Spheres of Influence International and Chair of OnSide Victoria presented a strong case for supporting multicultural diversity and the role of women in leadership in the Third Sector. The Third Sector Magazine ‘Women’s Leadership Seminar’ provided an ideal forum for exploring the role of women in management structures in the sector.
Third Sector organisations by definition are organisations traditionally classified as ‘not-for-profit’. The other two sectors are the public sector (government) and private sector (for-profit).
The Third Sector accounts for $29.6 billion or 4.7 %* of Australia’s domestic gross product. This makes the Not-for-Profit Sector one of the Country’s largest industries. During her presentation Carol Schwartz, AM, challenged the notion of the title of ‘not-for-profit’ and asked delegates to consider the term ‘for purpose’ as a suitable alternative; purpose rather than profit for profit’s sake.
'In the spirit of identifying what the third sector seeks to achieve, I like to refer to the "For Purpose" sector. The phrase "not-for-profit" only highlights what the sector does not do relative to the commercial sector. Defining ourselves positively is important to differentiating and empowering the sector,' said Carol.
The Third Sector Women's Leadership Seminar delegates represented a wide range of 'for purpose' organisations and provided some serious solutions to common challenges.
'The influence of this group cannot be measured' said Patrizia. 'I looked around the rom and saw a group of strong young woment, many who are juggling challenges beyond just being a female leader, who are not just the future of this sector, but who will have a significant impact on the future direction of Victoria and beyond.'
Patrizia’s role in mentoring and leading some of Australia’s great future leaders offered her experienced view of the ‘For Purpose’ sector and the importance in professionally developing future leaders (men and women) in the sector. Patrizia encourages diversity in leadership – diversity of cultural, gender, ability and age.
Diversity engages new members, provokes innovative and a diversified approach to tackling issues.

Leadership comes in many forms
For the most part women working in the sport environment know that organisations such as AWRA are enthusiastic and dynamic national volunteer associations established to provide leadership and a voice for women and girls in sport, physical activity and and active recreation, to enable their full participation.
Well, true to form, their support of the IWG Conference was certainly valued and recognised by those associated with the activity and is a testament to the work that goes on in the background to grow and sustain women's participation at every level of sport.
For my part the focus was on exploring how the constitutions, rules of association and by-laws by which our sports are governed, are often used as a convenient method of exclusion in the world of sport.
Thank you to AWRA and ANZ Bank for their generous support and making it possible for me to be involved in the recent International Women's Group Conference Women and Sport in Sydney.
